Immunization Changes for Grade 4 Students

first_imgSchool-aged children in Nova Scotia will now have more protection against chicken pox and meningitis. The immunization program in schools will now include immunization against chicken pox for Grade 4 students who have not had chicken pox before; and meningococcal immunization of Grade 4 students to protect against certain types of meningitis. Children will receive the vaccines this fall as part of the regularly scheduled school immunization program. Dr. Jeff Scott, chief medical officer of health, is encouraging parents to ensure their children are immunized. “Immunization offers good protection against disease with little risk of side-effects,” he said. “We need to take advantage of these vaccines in order to keep more young people healthy.” These vaccines are the last phase of the province’s expanded immunization program, which was first announced by Health Minister Angus MacIsaac in November 2004.
