Public Lecture on Hereditary Cancers and Genetic Testing


first_img Cancer Care Nova Scotia is a program of the Department of Health created to reduce the burden of cancer on individuals, families and the health care system through prevention, screening, education and research. A lecture to help Nova Scotians answer questions about hereditary cancers and genetic testing will be hosted by Cancer Care Nova Scotia on Tuesday, May 20, in Halifax. It will also be available by video conference at 19 sites across the province. It is part of the Cancer Answers lecture series, designed to provide Nova Scotians with quality cancer information. The lecture will be presented by Patricia Steele, genetic counsellor, Maritime Hereditary Cancer Service, IWK Health Centre. “Knowing your risk for a hereditary cancer and any actions you can take to reduce that risk is important information for Nova Scotians,” said Theresa Marie Underhill, chief operating officer, Cancer Care Nova Scotia. “The Maritime Hereditary Cancer Service provides assessment, education, counseling, genetic testing, interpretation of test results and screening recommendations for people who may have a hereditary cancer risk. “Patients, families and loved ones who have questions or want to learn more about hereditary cancers and genetic testing will find this lecture interesting and helpful.” The lecture will be held from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Royal Bank Lecture Theatre of the Halifax Infirmary, 1796 Summer St. and available by video conference at: Dartmouth General Hospital, Dartmouth Hants Community Hospital, Windsor Eastern Memorial Hospital, Canso St. Martha’s Regional Hospital, Antigonish Strait Richmond Hospital, Evanston St. Ann’s Community and Nursing Care Centre, Arichat AVH Chipman Boardroom, Annapolis Valley Industrial Park, Kentville Colchester Regional Hospital, Truro Lillian Fraser Memorial Hospital, Tatamagouche Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre, Amherst South Shore Regional Hospital, Bridgewater Queens General Hospital, Liverpool Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital, Inverness Victoria County Memorial Hospital, Baddeck Buchanan Memorial Hospital, Neil’s Harbour Yarmouth Regional Hospital, Yarmouth and Roseway Hospital, Shelburnelast_img read more
