Holiday shoppers steady but not jampacked in Calgary stores

Holiday shoppers “steady but not jam-packed” in Calgary stores The streets and malls may be decked out in festive finery, but are the shoppers turning out and spending? There’s only one weekend left until Christmas, and at Chinook Centre, General Manager Paige O’Neill says traffic is down slightly from last year.“We usually do monthly (numbers), but through the Christmas season we usually do weekly, and we are trending a little bit down from last year. Part of that may be the fact that Nordstrom’s opened last September, so we’re sort of coming off that new high for them and getting a full, sort of balanced year,” she said. The real rush is likely to happen when kids get out of school for the holidays, this Friday.CrossIron Mills General Manager James Moller tells 660 News, the season got off to a roaring start.“We’ve had good traffic right up to November, including Black Friday and December has been decent. I was here on Saturday, and I actually thought it was going to be a bit busier. It was steady, but it wasn’t overwhelming,” he said.Maggie Schofield with the Downtown Business Association says the situation is similar at shops in the core.“We’re certainly seeing things you know, steady, but not jam-packed, not thinking that Christmas is a week away,” she said.O’Neill says they were very busy on Black Friday with 3,000 more shoppers than last year, and are setting their sights on Boxing Day, when most stores in the mall will be open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Retailers at CrossIron Mills will also open at 8 a.m. on December 26. by Cindy White Posted Dec 14, 2015 11:12 am MDT Last Updated Dec 14, 2015 at 11:15 am MDT AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email STOCK PHOTO/PEXELS.COM read more
