Wiesner Named Associate Dean of Engineering School

Wiesner has been appointedassociate dean in Rice University’s George R. Brown School of Engineering.Wiesner, a Rice professor of environmental science andengineering, conducts research and teaching in the area of physical-chemicalprocesses, particularly for water quality control.“Mark is a bright and energetic young faculty member whosebackground both complement and agree with mine,” says Sidney Burrus, dean of theGeorge R. Brown School of Engineering. “His interests in both education andresearch will serve the Brown School well. Although there will be some divisionof responsibilities, we will work together on most important issues.”Before joining the Rice faculty in 1988, Wiesner worked as aresearch engineer in the water treatment research laboratories of the Lyonnaisedes Eaux, Le Pecq, France and completed post-doctoral work at the ChemicalEngineering Sciences Laboratory of the Ecole Nationale Superieure des IndustriesChimiques in Nancy, France. Later, as a principal engineer with theenvironmental engineering consulting firm of Malcolm Pirnie, Inc., in New York,he worked on potable water treatment and water quality modelingprojects.Wiesner earned a B.A. degree from Coe College in 1978 and wenton to earn an M.S. degree from the University of Iowa and a Ph.D. from JohnsHopkins University. In addition to numerous national and international memberships,Wiesner is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board, International Center forWater, Nancy, France; he is U.S. director of the European Union/United StatesUniversity Consortium on Environmental Engineering Education; and he is chair ofthe NASA Advisory Committee on life support systems.Wiesner has authored over 50 technical papers and book chaptersand currently serves as an Associate Editor of the Journal of EnvironmentalEngineering, American Society of Civil Engineers.
