Gareth Southgate suggests England over-achieved at the World Cup

first_imgGareth Southgate believes England over-achieved at this summer’s World Cup following their third place play-off defeat to Belgium on Saturday. It’s been a memorable campaign for the Three Lions, who made the last four of the tournament for the first time since 1990. Speaking to talkSPORT’s Nigel Adderley after the game, Southgate heaped praise on his England side for their efforts in their final game in Russia and for the tournament as a whole. He said: “The players gave everything. They never stopped and showed pride in the shirt. I don’t think I could have asked any more of them.“It was always a huge task for us. We were playing one of the best three teams in the world.“They’ve had an extra day to prepare from their semi-final game which at this stage of a tournament makes a big difference.“Belgium’s quality on the counter-attack was of the highest order. You’re always wary of the individuals they have. Some of our defending of that was brilliant.“John Stones’ performance was top drawer in particular but there were others as well.“I’m hugely proud of the players because they have gone right to the final whistle.“We were a bit sluggish in the first-half but there was a drive in the second-half. We looked a threat and created chances.“But we recognise where we are. We’ve had a brilliant tournament. To achieve a semi-final is probably above where we are in terms of our standing in the world.” 2 2 Southgate claimed England have performed better than where they stand in the world And following their heartbreaking defeat in the semi-finals to Croatia, England were unable to lift themselves for their final game at these finals.Goals from Thomas Meunier and Eden Hazard meant Southgate’s men missed the opportunity to become the second most successful England team at a World Cup.They came close with an effort from Eric Dier in the second-half but were second best for most of the game.Fans rave about Eric Dier’s display against Belgium Belgium were very threatening on the counter-attack and the England boss was quick to point out the depth of quality the Red Devils possess. first_imgSinn Féin Finance Spokesperson Pearse Doherty has said the Family Home Tax will be “unsustainable for many” and shows the government is “out-of-touch with citizens and economic reality”.Deputy Doherty insisted: “Today we saw the government rush through the second piece of legislation on the Family Home Tax. Once again their arrogance resulted in little or no debate on the most important issue facing many people.“This cabinet with their large salaries will not feel the effect of this new tax but hundreds of thousands of others in mortgage arrears, unemployed or simply struggling month to month will feel it acutely. The government needs to get out of their comfortable seats and recognise this fact. “This legislation is being rushed through without debate so that the Revenue Commissioners can post out letters of demand over the coming days. This is yet another bill on top of increases in motor tax and other direct and indirect taxes for many families. We know this government is hell-bent on taxing water as soon as possible too and the reality of cuts is clear to all after five years of austerity budgets. That is the reality this government must face up to.“At some point this government must recognise that people are carrying a great burden which in many cases is unsustainable. This should be clear from the mortgage arrears crisis and the stagnant sky-high rates of unemployment and famine level emigration.“We have shown how an alternative Wealth Tax would be a fairer alternative which would not dampen the domestic economy.“Sinn Féin is the only party with a clear and consistent opposition to a Family Home Tax. This is an unfair tax which takes no regard to stamp duty paid, management fees or ability to pay in most cases. Sinn Féin is determined to see this tax repealed rather than simply tinkered with.”  FAMILY HOME TAX IS UNSUSTAINABLE, SAYS DOHERTY was last modified: March 5th, 2013 by BrendaShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window) Tags:FAMILY HOME TAX IS UNSUSTAINABLESAYS DOHERTYlast_img read more
