Brexit without an agreement would have a detrimental impact on one of the UK’s most important economic sectors. “The UK is the fifth largest tourism economy in the world. Given its importance to the UK economy, it is now clear that Brexit would have a dramatic impact on one of the most important sectors in the UK without an agreement.Said Gloria Guevara, president and CEO of WTTC. “If the IMF’s broader economy’s forecast comes true, Europe would incur a total cost of more than £ 40 billion and lose more than 700.000 jobs.” According to the WTTC, which represents the private travel and tourism sector globally, the tourism industry contributes more than € 1.5 trillion to EU GDP (10,3% of the total) and supports 27,3 million jobs of the total). In the UK, the sector contributes to GDP of £ 11,7 billion (213,8% of the total) and supports four million jobs (10,5% of the total). The WTTC analysis models the impact on the travel and tourism sector over the next decade, based on a projected 7,7% drop in economic activity in the wider British economy according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF). In this situation, Brexit without an agreement would result in losses of 308.000 jobs in the UK economy and 399.000 jobs in the rest of the EU and £ 18,6 billion in GDP of the UK economy and £ 22 billion of GDP for the economies of the rest of the EU. According to a new analysis by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), more than 300.000 jobs could be jeopardized in the UK tourism sector and almost 400.000 in Europe if the UK leaves the European Union without an agreement on 29 March. In order to minimize such impact, it is crucial that the United Kingdom continues to have access to the single aviation market and that visa-free travel between the UK and the EU needs to be maintained. It is also important to maintain the mobility of tourism workers across the UK and the EU, and security cooperation would avoid lengthy border controls.
