ESA Space Orbiter Detects Hairy Blue Spider on Mars

first_img Watch out: A European Space Agency (ESA) space orbiter recently spotted a “hairy blue spider” on Mars, and its massive, “eight-legged frame” appears to be sprawled across the Red Planet. The strange sight, which was taken by the ESA-Roscosmos ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter’s Colour and Stereo Surface Imaging System (CaSSIS), shows the Terra Sabaea region of Mars, according to an ESA press release.Today is @ESA_TGO’s three year anniversary since launch, and we’re celebrating with this super image gallery of recent postcards from #Mars, including immersive #3D stereo views & a sighting of @NASAInSight! #ExoMars https://t.co/HtHsFjbZtd pic.twitter.com/UU19TGAnFg— @ESA_ExoMars (@ESA_ExoMars) March 14, 2019But, this isn’t a real arthropod: It’s an eerie pattern that lies on the crest of one of Mars’ ridges, and might be a result of some dust devil activity, which involves the convergence of hundreds (or possibly thousands) of tiny martian tornadoes.I launched into #space #OTD three years ago! To celebrate, as well as @NASAInSight‘s photo, I’d like to show you some of my favourite images I’ve taken of #Mars in the last months. This one is particularly crazy! Can you guess what it shows? https://t.co/WQv792hAKs pic.twitter.com/Di5kkR23Pl— ExoMars orbiter (@ESA_TGO) March 14, 2019To bring the space orbiter’s observations to life, the ESA showed a color-composite representation, where features that are bluer compared to Mars’ typical hue are depicted in bright blue colors. According to ESA, in actual color, these random streaks would appear as a reddish tone. On Mars, dust devils swirl the Red Planet’s surface material and expose fresher material below. It’s unknown why the streaks are very concentrated on Mars’ ridges, however, it might be due to a relationship to orographic lift, where carbon dioxide air masses flow uphill and intersect with other air masses.More on Geek.com:Astronauts Aboard Soyuz Rocket Successfully Reach the Space StationNASA Boss Says First Person on Mars Will ‘Likely Be a Woman’ Astronomers Discover 83 Supermassive Black Holes in the Early Universe Watch: Dolphin Leaps Feet Away From Unsuspecting SurferNASA Says 2 Asteroids Will Safely Fly By Earth This Weekend Stay on targetlast_img read more
