Commission on lawyer regulation moves toward recommendations

first_img March 1, 2005 Regular News Commission on lawyer regulation moves toward recommendations The Commission on Lawyer Regulation has completed an extensive two-day meeting and is moving toward making recommendations.Chair and Bar President-elect designate Hank Coxe told the Board of Governors recently that the panel could have a preliminary report by the Bar’s Annual Meeting in June.Even before then, “You will probably get for your April 8 meeting a laundry list of where this commission is heading on some of these issues,” he said. The commission met for two days in January and worked on topics from faster suspensions and disbarments when attorneys are convicted of felonies, whether most grievance complaints should be filtered through the Bar’s Attorney-Client Assistance Program, and whether public reprimands should be administered before the Board of Governors or before a local judge.Coxe said he had thought the reprimands would be more effective if administered, after a public notice, by a judge in the attorney’s home jurisdiction. But he said other members felt they were more effective when administered before the Board of Governors. He noted there are usually 50 to 70 public reprimands a year.Another suggestion, Coxe said, was to videotape the reprimands and replay them on the Bar’s Web site. The commission meets again on April 21-22, he said.center_img Commission on lawyer regulation moves toward recommendationslast_img read more
