Online travel bookings are becoming more mobile (Image Mark Harada) Mobile travel bookings are expected to triple by 2013, signalling a slight, but not insignificant shift in the way travel is booked online, a study by travel research firm PhoCusWright has found. According to the study, gross travel bookings made in the United States on mobile devices reached nearly US$2.6 billion in 2011, representing 2.4 per cent of all online travel purchases. And over the next two years, that share is anticipated to grow to over $8 billion, or 6.5 per cent of all internet bookings. Although its share of the total travel market will remain “small” over the next two years, the dollar value being transacted on Smartphones, tablet computers and other portable gadgets is “substantial”, says PhoCusWright communications director and senior analyst Cathy Schetzina. “The mobile platform is clearly changing traveler behavior, yielding incremental bookings in addition to the expected channel shift,” Ms Schetzina remarked. “And as merchandising capabilities improve, travel companies will have an even broader range of mobile revenue opportunities.” Source = e-Travel Blackboard: M.H
