But now, ending the judicial harassment to which he is being subjected is urgent on health grounds as well.Held in Koléa prison near Algiers in harsh conditions since 29 March, Drareni appeared not only to have lost a lot of weight but also to be very weak at the 8 September hearing. The national Khaled Drareni Support Committee was created the day after Drareni was sentenced to three years in prison on 12 August. Made up lawyers, journalists, NGOs and ordinary citizens, it organizes demonstrations every Monday outside the House of the Press in Algiers in which hundreds of journalists take part. The international support committee, whose members include Pierre Audin, the son of Algerian independence hero Maurice Audin, was created on 23 July and launched a major international solidarity campaign entitled #WeAreKhaled in mid-August.On 7 September, RSF organized a protest outside the Algerian embassy in Paris in solidarity with Drareni in which many well-known French TV anchors took part. A demonstration was also held in Tunis the same day at the request of RSF, the National Union of Tunisian Journalists and Amnesty International. The absurd charges on which Drareni was convicted at the original trial were “inciting an unarmed gathering” and “endangering national unity.” The prosecutor asked for his three-year jail sentence to be increased to four years at the appeal hearing on 8 September. The court is expected to issue its decision on 15 September.Algeria is ranked 146th out of 180 countries in RSF’s 2020 World Press Freedom Index, five places lower than in 2019 and 27 places lower than in 2015. Giving women the edge

first_imgWhen businesswoman Lisa von Sturmer gave a sales pitch, she wore a bow in her hair on purpose. “They’d think I was fluffy, that they could probably push me around — and it would surprise them when they discovered who I really am. And it worked!”Von Sturmer, CEO of Growing City, was the keynote speaker for Women’s Entrepreneurship Day (WED) 2016 at Harvard late last month. She was joined by female entrepreneurs from around the world who came to share their expertise on business, success, and navigating the corporate world. The event was divided into two parts: speakers and panels. Myra White, lecturer in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and professor in the management program at Harvard Extension School, served as moderator. Among the other speakers and panelists were Priya Korrapati, CEO of eMedEvents; Robyn Johnson, ecommerce consultant and coach and founder of Best from The Nest; Avisha Patel, founder of Friendsline; Dr. Isaura Gonzalez, clinical psychologist and founder of Latina Mastermind; and Maria Mariano, president of Centre de Distribution les Diamants Inc.Von Sturmer said that she believes femininity has its place in the business world. She also pointed out that “girly features” are not necessarily a bad thing, using her experience on the TV show “Dragons’ Den” as an example. (“Dragons’ Den” is a CBC reality program featuring entrepreneurs pitching their business ideas to secure investment finance from a panel of venture capitalists.) In 2013, von Sturmer appeared on the show and asked for $100,000 for Growing City, North America’s first office composting service. Although she didn’t walk away with the money, just appearing on the show helped her client base grow at a rapid pace.Aksinia Stavskaya (white dress), North American Ambassador for Women’s Entrepreneurship Day, spoke during a panel about female entrepreneurs overcoming challenges. Photo by Jermane StephingerVon Sturmer also pointed to research by MIT’s Associate Dean for Innovation Fiona Murray, who recently studied the “pecking order” of venture capitalists. She found that those who generally receive the most recognition are attractive men, followed by unattractive men, unattractive women, and lastly attractive women.“So if you’re a woman, as soon as you walk in the door you’re already at the bottom of the pile,” von Sturmer said. “You’re going to have to work harder to overcome their expectations, but you can also use these assumptions to your advantage.”The other messages covered a wide range of topics. Mariano delivered a powerful message about consistency and the importance of family. Harvard Extension Entrepreneurship and Real Estate Association (HEEREA) founder Dolly Amaya suggested forming an intimate relation with money in order to build a sustainable business. “Financial literacy enables people to understand what is needed to increase profitability,” she said. Entrepreneur, investor, and mentor Tai Lopez compared a bad mentor to a bad date and stressed the importance of finding “someone who motivates and inspires us to be a better version of ourselves.”The women’s messages evoked a palpable feeling of inspiration and motivation in the audience. “I didn’t think talking about business could be such an entertainment,” said Ashley Fournier, faculty assistant at Harvard Law School. While the audience mingled and socialized during a brief intermission, the speakers and panelists networked. The highly successful women in the crowd included Emmy-nominated TV news producer Nneka Nwosu Faison.WED was co-organized by the Harvard Graduate Council and HEEREA. North America Ambassador for WED Aksinia Stavskaya was the lead organizer; Peter J. Dyrud, president of the Harvard Graduate Council was co-curator of the event.     — Jia Roy of HEEREA also contributed to this articleSavelast_img read more

Rwandan Website Editor Murdered: This Week in Online Tyranny

first_imgA Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Editor of Rwandan website murdered. Jean Leonard Rugambage, the acting editor of Umuvugizi newspaper, which had been blocked by the Rwandan government, was murdered last Friday. He was by two men who fled in a car outside his home in Kigali. Bless his family. The Rwandan government should feel ashamed. Again.Reporters Without Borders opens anti-censorship shelter. “The group unveiled a room in its Paris headquarters set aside for fugitive journalists or bloggers from abroad to drop in and blog with secure Internet connections using software that masks their online identity.” The center also trains bloggers and others in the use of circumventors and proxies and other tools to read and publish while avoiding arrest. They offer a high-speed anonymous Internet connection as well. Reporters Without Borders, why must you rock so? Internet “kill switch” bill heads to Senate. The dreadfully misguided Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act Bill is heading to the U.S. senate. This bill gives the President emergency powers to power down the Internet in the event of an international attack on the systems. Not only is concentrating power over a massive aspect of the nation’s communications system in one hand a bad idea, it is a power which will never be repealed if granted. No one gives back power once they have it. Also, it creates a situation in which providers and communications companies are co-opted into the process. Another awful idea. On one hand, relying on CEOs to be deputies is unfair to them. On the other hand, giving them that power is unfair to us. Pakistan to monitor all Internet for “blasphemy.” Last Friday, Pakistan announced it is beginning to monitor all the Internet tools and sites they can for “blasphemy.” Blasphemy is a handy word and let’s watch as it dovetails with statistical improbability with the interests of the country’s rulers. Shall we? Oh, let’s.India requires Skype, Google, RIM to provide all data through their devices to Indian security agencies. This is surprising news from a country not often associated with draconian online security and the paranoia it results from. “The Department of Telecom (DoT) will ask these companies to either ensure that data going through their networks be made available to security agencies in a readable format or face a ban from offering services in India…Such a law would force companies such as Skype to give complete access to their networks or set up a local server in India to allow security agencies to track content.” My hand to G-d I’m baffled by this. Is Indian trying to get rid of that pesky technological elite it’s built up? Is it jealous of Pakistan?Turkey fights back against online censorship. Turkey has been the victim of some egregious censorship actions, predicated as much on child porn as religion. They have shut down, and kept down, everything from YouTube to Blogger. An alliance of 30 groups of Internet and free speech organizations are now attempting to reverse that trend in the courts, with lawsuits. Go Turkey!Afghanistan now blocks Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, Gmail and many others. Internet access in the country grew from near none to half a million in the last decade. It started as an online war against Taliban (and presumably Al Qaeda) recruiting. Then they added porno. And so it goes. Again, watch how frequently the government’s interest and the Internet censorship authorities’ diverge. I’m going to bet on infrequently. Lebanon arrests three for commenting on Facebook. Three were arrested, and a fourth has a warrant out on him, for “slandering” President Michel Suleiman on Facebook. This is especially disheartening as Lebanon is usually more of a bastion of free speech than the countries around it, although they have pulled this stunt before. Look here. Every single “law” that limits free speech is going to be misused by powerful people in that country that passes it for political purposes. There are no exceptions to this. In five years of following this topic and reporting on it I have seen zero exceptions. Some countries, depending on the way power is balanced, will neutralize such grabs, beat them back or at least moderate them. But most won’t. Also, don’t forget that the Roman republic became the Empire by consistent, incremental changes in laws. The Third Reich murdered Jews, Gypsies, gays and others all according to the law. The law is not a repository of rights. It is a hammer. Which way it swings depends entirely on who’s hand’s on the handle.
