LONDON (AP):Rarely has a north London derby had such implications for the destination of the English Premier League trophy. When Tottenham host Arsenal tomorrow it will be a meeting of second and third with only three points separating. After both lost Wednesday, a draw between the neighbours could allow Leicester to move further in front in their improbable title challenge when they travel to Watford tomorrow.Leicester were held by West Bromwich Albion on Tuesday but were celebrating the following night when the three teams below them Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester City all lost.Arsenal’s 2-1 home defeat to Swansea has left Arsene Wenger’s side on a three-game losing streak in all competitions for the first time in six years. That first Premier League title since 2004 is looking increasingly hard to secure for Arsene Wenger, even in this most unpredictable season.”We have to focus on our job and come back reminding ourselves that we have some quality as well,” the Arsenal manager said.Tottenham’s 1-0 loss at West Ham on Wednesday punctured the optimism gathering around White Hart Lane that the 55-year wait for the title could be ending. Instead of going top in March for the first time since 1964, Tottenham remain second.Top-scorer Harry Kane is on a four-game barren run in front of goal but Arsenal will be without injured Petr Cech tomorrow as the goalkeeper recovers from a calf injury.”One year ago we always spoke about reducing the gap with the top four and now we are second in the table,” Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino said Thursday. “Who knows what will happen in the future? Now we need to be focused on the present.”The future for Tottenham should be a return to the Champions League, having only competed once in Europe’s top competition in 2010-11.UNITED RESURGENCESuddenly Manchester United’s prospects of returning to the top four are looking far healthier. Buoyed by four successive wins in all competitions, United are now only fifth due to neighbours City having a superior goal difference.”We are showing passion,” United midfielder Ander Herrera said ahead of Sunday’s game at West Brom. “We fight to the end. We show when we don’t play good we can win. I think that the attitude is very good.”I am optimistic because we can still fight for everything. We want to be in the top four. We know it’s not easy because our opponents are tough, but we are Man United: we have to win.”SWANSEA HEALTH SCARESwansea head coach Francesco Guidolin remained hospitalised yesterday after missing his side’s victory over Arsenal with a chest infection. The 60-year-old Italian was referred to a respiratory specialist in London.”Francesco remains comfortable in hospital and is receiving excellent care and treatment,” Swansea said in a statement. “He is making good progress and is in good spirits … no release date from hospital has been confirmed at present.”The victory at Arsenal, with first-team coach Alan Curtis in charge, moved Swansea six points clear of tomorrow’s opponents Norwich, who are in the relegation zone.Chelsea remain unbeaten in the league since Guus Hiddink took charge in December, with the ailing champions rising from the relegation zone to 10th place. Chelsea host Stoke tomorrow.

14 March 2012 South Africa handed over humanitarian aid to Madagascar on Tuesday to help the island nation recover from the devastation caused by the recent cyclone Giovanna and tropical storm Irina. Led by Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Marius Fransman, the South African mission saw several aid organisations contributing and pledging aid and assistance to Madagascar. These include the Al-Imdaad Foundation, which contributed aid worth US$100 000 in the form of blankets, water-purification tablets, tents and food hampers, as well as Netcare, which assisted with logistical arrangements. The Norwegian Government contributed to the humanitarian project by making the transportation of the aid to Madagascar possible. The two tropical disturbances which hit Madagascar last week killed at least 111 people and left 332 204 people homeless, according to the National Office of Risks and Disasters Management. The highest number of deaths recorded after the passage of Irina was in Ifanadiana district in the southeast of the island country, with 48 reported dead; while Vangaindrano and Farafangana districts, also in the southeast, recorded the most homeless people, with 3 909 and 25 086 respectively. Nearly 7 056 housing spaces were flooded, 147 were damaged and 1 372 were completely destroyed by Irina, while 3 713 hectares of rice fields and 12 600 crop fields were affected. The data was collected from 103 of the 829 municipalities in the trajectory of Irina. Cyclone Geralda, which swept through the island country in February 1994, was the last cyclone category 4 before Giovanna. Geralda killed 231 people. Last year, Cyclone Bingiza killed at least 34 people and left 216 000 homeless. In 2010, tropical storm Hubert killed at least 83 people and left nearly 187 000 homeless. Madagascar enters in the cyclone season from 15 November to 30 April of each year. Whilst in Madagascar, Fransman – who is also chair of the SADC Organ Troika and serves as President Jacob Zuma’s special envoy on Madagascar – was expected to meet with the Malagasy stakeholders to address certain outstanding aspects pertaining to the full implementation of the SADC roadmap aimed at restoring political stability to the island nation. New Delhi, Jun 13 (PTI) In its pursuit to improve the standard of womens hockey, Hockey India today named 33 core probables for the junior womens national camp to be held at Sports Authority of India (SAI) centre in Bengaluru. The core probables were picked after an intense selection trials conducted under the watchful eyes Hockey India High Performance Director, David John. The core group will be trained by Indian junior womens team coach Baljeet Singh Saini. Saini, who represented India at two successive Olympic Games – 1996 in Atlanta and 2000 in Sydney, has previously worked with the junior womens squad in 2016 and under his tutelage the U-18 Indian womens team had won a bronze medal at the U-18 Asia Cup held in December last year. The core group has been selected on the basis of speed, agility, skill and basic understanding of the game. The vision behind organising the national camp, which will continue till July 3, is to develop a core group of players who will aim to qualify for the prestigious 2020 junior womens World Cup. The core group features players from Madhya Pradesh Hockey Academy, who won the Hockey India 7th Junior Women National Hockey Championship 2017, runners-up Hockey Haryana, Hockey Bhopal, Hockey Him, Hockey Chandigarh, Hockey Odisha, Hockey Uttarakhand, Hockey Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh Hockey, Association of Indian Universities, Sports Authority of India, Hockey Gangpur-Odisha and Hockey Mizoram. “We have analysed all the 38 players who were at the national Camp since May 24, and Hockey Indias selection committee has further pruned down the core probables to 33 who will carry on their training. This core group will be provided with a support staff including scientific advisor, video analyst, physiotherapist and a masseuse just like we have for our senior team programs,” said John. “We have long-term goals for this group and with our vision set on the 2020 and 2024 Olympic Games and the 2020 junior World Cup, these 33 core probables will go through a development process that will prepare them for the challenges at the international level. “This is a very talented group and I expect some of these girls to push for a place in the senior womens team in the coming months,” he added.
