Google Duplex arriving on iPhones more Android devices

The new Google Assistant feature for booking restaurant reservations is rolling out for more Android and iOS devices in the US, a Google spokesperson confirmed Wednesday.The support page for Duplex, spotted earlier by 9to5Google, says Android devices running version 5.0 or later and iPhones with Google Assistant installed can use Duplex, but not everywhere. XDA Developers reported Wednesday  it was able to use Duplex on a Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus.Previously, Duplex was available only on Google’s Pixel phones. In March, Google said Duplex was expanding to Pixel owners in 43 states.Google Duplex was announced last May and boasted the ability to make calls on the user’s behalf. A “bullet” of dark matter shot through space recently, leaving a hole through the Milky Way. The “bullet” has been described as a “low-mass dark-matter subhalo” with a mass greater than the Sun.The event itself was not observed by telescopes, leading to suggestions that it could have been caused by something non-luminescent. Scientists at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics discovered evidence of its existence. A series of gaps were found in the Milky Way’s stellar stream, indicating that something had breached the halo and left a ragged cluster of stars in its wake.”It’s a dense bullet of something,” said Ana Bonaca, a Fellow at the facility. Bonaca presented this observation at an American Physical Society conference in Denver on April 15. While discussing evidence for dark substructures in our galaxy’s halo, Bonaca also described the stellar stream. Under normal circumstances, the stream forms a curved line of stars that move together across the galaxy. A piece of dark matter has ripped a hole in our galaxy.ShutterstockThe largest of the stellar streams, GD-1 has only one gap, where stars once drifted apart in two directions. Another gap was seen recently, pointing to what is likely to be a globular cluster. There is a chance that the gap was created by a luminous object moving at a very fast speed. Though, that is unlikely because of the sheer size of the disturbance. It has been estimated that it was 10-20 parsecs (30-65 light years) across, which is “about the size of a globular cluster”. Globular Cluster NGC 1846 observed by a NASA Hubble Space TelescopeNASABonaca told Live Science that the “bullet” is unlike anything we have seen. It is much denser than a star, over a million times the mass of the Sun. She also expressed the possibility of it being a supermassive black hole, but that is unlikely since no flares or radiation were observed. Moreover, most galaxies have only one black hole, which is present at their centre.In a lecture series held at the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics on March 20, Bonaca explained that about 90 percent of the universe is believed to be dark matter. John Beacom of the Ohio State University has described the search for dark matter as “looking for lost keys only under the lamppost”, referring to the unobservable part of the universe.This observation opens up new possibilities for research before our galaxy collides with another. Bonaca’s next move is to do more mapping projects and understand dark matter. She is looking for areas where unseen disturbances seem to be knocking stars around. Siemens wins STATCOM contract from Power Grid Corporation shares rise 3


first_imgSiemens India, an electronics and electrical engineering company, informed the stock exchanges on Tuesday that it bagged orders worth Rs. 570 crore from state-run Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL) for installation of power projects in Bihar, Odisha and Jharkhand.Shares of Siemens India gained 2.85 percent on the BSE to close at Rs. 1,290.10. “The scope of the order includes design, engineering, supply, civil, installation, testing and commissioning of Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOMs) at four substation locations of PGCIL: Ranchi, Rourkela, Kishenganj and Jeypore across the states of Bihar, Jharkhand and Odisha,” the Indian arm of the Munich-based multinational informed the BSE on Tuesday.”The 400 kV STATCOMs are being manufactured at Siemens Ltd.’s manufacturing plant at Goa. With fast response time of STATCOM controls, power consumers will be benefited in the form of constant grid voltage and frequency leading to availability of uninterrupted quality power,” the company said in its regulatory filing.The latest win comes a week after Siemens India bagged a contract from state-run Diesel Locomotive Works, Varanasi, to design and install traction systems valued at Rs. 83 crore.”The order is to design, supply and install 40 Alternating Current (AC) Traction Systems for dual-cab high horsepower diesel engine locomotives.The AC Traction Systems will be produced at Nashik Factory of Siemens Limited,” the company informed the BSE on June 22.last_img read more

Apple Wants to Expand Its Footprint in the Workplace

Apple Inc is embarking on its most aggressive expansion yet onto corporate turf, hiring a dedicated sales force to talk with potential clients like Citigroup Inc and working in concert with a dozen or so developers, two sources familiar with its plans say.Experts say the company hopes to offset a gradual deceleration in growth – highlighted by iPad sales that have declined three straight quarters – by expanding its footprint in the workplace.Three months after unveiling a partnership with IBM to develop apps for corporate clients and sell them on devices, the iPhone maker’s plans to challenge sector leaders Hewlett-Packard, Dell Inc, Oracle and SAP are starting to take shape.Details remain scant, but some industry experts say that the tie-up with Big Blue gives Apple an opportunity to begin to challenge Hewlett Packard’s and Dell’s dominance of office IT, and Oracle and SAP’s command of work applications. Depending on its progress, it may hamper Microsoft, Samsung’s or Google’s own efforts in the nascent market for mobile work applications.Apps developers and other sources familiar with Apple’s plans who could not speak publicly provided additional details on how the iPhone maker is working behind the scenes.The iPhone maker has worked closely with a group of startups, including ServiceMax and PlanGrid, that already specialize in selling apps to corporate America. The two people familiar with the plans, but who could not speak publicly about them, say Apple is already in talks with other mobile enterprise developers to bring them into a more formal partnership.PlanGrid is a mobile app for construction workers to share and view blueprints. ServiceMax is a mobile app that makes it easy for companies to manage fleets of field service technicians by ensuring they have access to the right information.Apple has been sending dedicated sales teams to talk to chief information officers. At least one financial services corporation, Citigroup, has been in talks to sign on, one of the two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.Another person familiar with the developer’s plans told Reuters that ServiceMax, whose existing customers include Procter & Gamble and DuPont, has co-hosted eight dinners with Apple over the past year in locations across the United States. About 25 or 30 chief information officers and “chief service officers” typically show up at these joint marketing and sales events.ServiceMax declined comment on what they were specifically working on with Apple. PlanGrid also declined comment.But ServiceMax chief marketing officer, Stacey Epstein, said about 95 percent of its customers use Apple devices. Each new customer will typically order thousands of iPhones and iPads, she added.”The field service market alone is a $15 billion market,” said Epstein. “One of our accounts may have thousands of field service technicians. It’s a huge market opportunity for Apple.”Apple declined to comment for this story.’Messy, Stupid’ Demands’Apple has mostly kept its plans under wraps since July, when it announced the deal with IBM. Their partnership has alternately been hailed as a dream alliance, or dismissed as an uncertain tie-up between two companies with very different philosophies.Many American corporations already deploy tablets among their workforces, for purposes ranging from pharmaceutical sales to mobile accounting.“From Apple’s point of view the enterprise is really messy, oftentimes unreasonable or even stupid in its demands,” said John Rymer, an analyst at Forrester. “They’ve never had a business model to deal with any of that. But they do want the penetration and they do want what market share they can get.”Its rivals harbor similar ambitions. A separate source familiar with the matter said Samsung is stepping up its efforts to sell devices to large enterprise clients. The company hired former chief information officer Robin Bienfait to spearhead that effort, and is on the hunt for acquisition opportunities, the person said. The source requested anonymity as they were involved in private conversations. Apple also needed help to penetrate corporations. It is relying on IBM’s predictive software, enterprise-grade security and data analytics to set its upcoming suite of apps apart from rival offerings from Oracle and Microsoft, the two original sources said.Personnel from IBM Global Technology Services, its outsourced IT division, will handle technical support for clients under the initiative, and the two companies also plan on setting up a dedicated 24-7 hotline, according to a recently updated Apple support website.The iPhone maker may be trying to replicate the model that served the iPhone well: hook the client on the software and content, then keep them coming back for the hardware, which is what drives the lions’ share of Apple’s bottom line.“It does make sense, but the devil’s in the details,” said Rymer at Forrester. “The apps have to work and be economic. Can they produce solutions that are meaningful to enough people and reduce the cost over the customers doing it themselves?
