CD AndersonThe Square Kilometre Array (SKA) radio telescope project, near the town of Carnarvon in the remote Northern Cape, revealed the first image of space taken using the project’s first phase of 16 fully-functioning MeerKAT receptor units.Named ‘First Light’, the image was presented at an onsite function held on 16 July 2016.SKA SOUTH AFRICA – Google Search https://t.co/rkUO4fplxv pic.twitter.com/PZ5Z7402uv— Sonia (@S_o_n_i_a) July 9, 2016The presentation formed part of a tour of the SKA facilities by other ministers and 11 government deputy ministers, invited by Science and Technology Minister Naledi Pandor.Among the dignitaries was Ebrahim Patel, minister of economic development and member of the Presidential Infrastructure Co-ordinating Commission (PICC).Infrastructure investment is a key priority of the National Development Plan and the New Growth Path, and the SKA project is one of 18 strategic infrastructure projects identified by the PICC as a priority for national economic growth. The aim of the tour, said Pandor, was to create project ambassadors in the government to spread the message of SKA’s ground-breaking work in the field of astro-science that aided South Africa’s reputation as a global scientific player, as well as to highlight the positive impact of the project on the people of Carnarvon.Min Pandor and Dep Minister during the visit to the SKA tdy, NCape pic.twitter.com/8DfnhprdcU— tommy makhode (@tommymakhode) July 16, 2016‘First Light’SKA’s chief scientist, Dr Fernando Camilo, unveiled the ‘First Light’ image during the ministers’ visit, beginning with some background about how radio wave technology worked and how it was evolving as SKA itself advanced.Highlighting the differences between images taken with a conventional visual telescope – one in Chile – and a smaller radio telescope array in the United States, Camilo said the image captured by the 16-unit array – a quarter of its prospective capacity – was much clearer and lot more detailed than anything captured before. It revealed over 1 300 galaxies in a tiny corner of the universe where only 70 were known before.A particular highlight of the image shows what is known as a Fanaroff-Riley Class 2 (FR2) object: a massive black hole in the distant universe. In the image, matter can be seen falling into the black hole and producing the bright dot at the centre. The FR2 object launches jets of powerful electrons moving at close to the speed of light, emitting radio waves that are then detected with the array. (Refer to the images in the above tweet)Camilo called the SKA array, as it is now, operating on a quarter of its potential, a “remarkable image machine”. These latest image developments were “beautiful and far better than we could have expected”. Once the full array of 64 MeerKATs was completed, the possibilities for uncovering clearer and more noteworthy cosmic events was a very exciting prospect.Global infrastructure for the worldEarlier today, @dstgovza Minister Naledi #Pandor commissioned 16 dishes of the 64-dish MeerKAT completed so far #SKA pic.twitter.com/sLr1XDv80P— SA Gov News (@SAgovnews) July 16, 2016In her keynote address, Pandor, a passionate advocate of SKA, noted “the dedicated work of hundreds of engineers, scientists, managers and other staff, and South African and international industrial partners, as well as the support of the government and people of South Africa for more than a decade”.The project would turn innovation and development activities into real economic benefits for the people of the area and reputation of the country. Africa’s role in the global science community was vital and very much assured, she said. “We are building a global infrastructure for the world.”What is SKA?The Square Kilometre Array South Africa is a radio telescope project made up of a series of receptor dishes called MeerKATs that collect sensitive radio wave frequencies from outer space, detecting objects millions, even billions of light years away from Earth. The SKA facility then processes the huge amounts of data gathered from these radio waves to formulate images of the objects – including the birth of stars and the forming of new galaxies.Scientists use the information and images gathered by SKA telescopes to better understand how the universe evolved and continues to change.South Africa hosts the bulk of the SKA project, with investments by the government and private research partners totalling more than R3-billion ($205m).#MeerKAT #SKA #FirstLight(Infographic courtesy SKA Africa @SKA_Africa) pic.twitter.com/gSzqwzpXXe— CD Anderson (@bizarrojerri) July 18, 2016Currently the South African SKA site has 16 fully-functioning MeerKAT dishes, with the full array of 64 receptors expected to be completed by the end of 2017. This will make it part of the world’s most powerful radio telescope system.Set to be completed by 2020, the entire SKA system of 3 000 dishes in locations around the world, including in Australia, South America and the UK, will give astronomy, physics and a host of other sciences an almost limitless amount of data with which to advance human understanding of the universe. The South African section of the project alone has more than 500 global scientific groupsin line to use the Northern Cape array for research and discovery work over the next five years, bringing in much science tourism revenue.“What this will do is bring to South African and world astronomers the most astonishing and profoundly powerful instrument ever used before in radio astronomy,” SKA South Africa Project director Rob Adam said at the visit on Saturday.SouthAfrica.info reporterWould you like to use this article in your publication or on your website?See: Using SouthAfrica.info material

The code was originally designed to be a blogger’s platform, but has since growing into something much more.(Read ReadWrite’s own tenth anniversary celebration series.)Two Flavors Of WordPress: Blogging Platform & CMSWordPress actually has two implementations, which can confuse newcomers to the software. WordPress.com is a free service (not unlike, say, Blogger) that lets anyone create blogs using pre-built themes and tools. The other implementation is the open-source WordPress content management software, a standalone platform that you can install on a Web server with relative ease and have a website going in minutes. That’s not hyperbole, mind you, it really does take only minutes.Over the course of its existence, WordPress has matured from that simple-to-use blogging platform to a full-blown content management system (CMS) that rivals the sophistication of its open source rivals Joomla and Drupal – and a lot of closed source platforms, too. With a huge array of add-ons, WordPress can run anything from a community Web portal to a large e-commerce site.Strength From SimplicityWordPress’s real strength isn’t the sophistication of the platform – though that doesn’t hurt – but rather the core simplicity that runs all the way through the system. WordPress has always been easy to build with and manage. That is a huge advantage in a world where individuals and organizations often have to create websites at a moment’s notice. That consistency of simplicity is something Mullenweg noted himself when he penned a poignant letter to WordPress on the day of WordPress’ tenth anniversary:You’re so beautiful… I’m continually amazed and delighted by how you’ve grown. Your awkward years are behind you. Best of all, through it all, you’ve stuck with the principles that got you started in the first place. You’re always changing but that never changes. You’re unafraid to try new things that may seem wacky or unpopular at first.Anyone familiar with the passion that drives open source projects won’t be surprised by the tone of Mullenweg’s missive, and in this case, WordPress deserves the affection. For 10 years, it has proven to be a powerful content management platform and one of the flagships of the open source software movement.Blogging platforms like Tumblr may be getting all the headlines right now, but a lot of those headlines are being hosted on WordPress sites. Call it the Aldo Strategy: If he can get Mayweather feeling both confident and angry, there’s a chance Mayweather will let down his defense enough to attempt to finish McGregor in brute style — and maybe McGregor will have an opening.Mayweather hasn’t seemed interested in McGregor’s typical trash talk during the buildup to the fight, but perhaps he could waver the champion’s focus with the wrong word, an errant elbow or a rabbit punch behind the head — enough to draw a warning, but not lose a point.McGregor amplified his boasts this week, calling Mayweather “a broken man” and vowing to finish him within two rounds. Nobody knows whether McGregor actually believes his bluster, but the Irishman has defiantly vowed he will win. It’s not probable. But with McGregor, anything is possible. He throws hundreds of punches from every angle with the goal of setting up the vicious left hand that has turned out the lights on MMA opponents. And if none of that is successful, McGregor could bend the Marquess of Queensberry rules to their breaking point in hopes of goading Mayweather into a brawl.None of it is guaranteed to work. But it’s definitely worth a shot.Looking back at Mayweather’s history is a daunting task, given his 49-0 record, but it contains clues for tactics that could magnify McGregor’s chances. For instance, McGregor could amplify the strategy used by Marcos Maidana and Jose Luis Castillo. Both boxers pressed Mayweather constantly, using roughhouse tactics on the border of legality, and bombarded Mayweather with punches, many from unorthodox angles.Mayweather won both fights, but definitely looked uncomfortable for long stretches. McGregor doesn’t have the hand speed of those professional boxers, but he should strive to emulate their urgency. He should also attempt to show Mayweather things he’s never seen before in the ring, and his decision not to hire a boxing trainer for the bout might actually help in that regard. The UFC star should switch stances and try just about any punch, including the looping overhand shots rarely seen in high-level boxing matches because they’re easily countered, but common in MMA bouts because of the distance they create from the opponent. If McGregor gets hit, so be it. Every punch absorbed is the price for a chance to reply.McGregor believes Mayweather made a mistake by agreeing to fight in 8-ounce gloves instead of the typical 10-ounce pillows, but he shouldn’t rely solely on the unicorn one-punch knockout. While McGregor has definite power, only the biggest Mac homer would think it’s something Mayweather hasn’t seen from boxers — and Mayweather has shown a solid chin and excellent recovery skills on the few occasions he has been hit.Instead, the key is to use that energy to get in a good position to unload the left hand or a combination through Mayweather’s shifty defense. McGregor could repeatedly tie up Mayweather and attempt to land shots in the clinch.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM), the Indian subsidiary of Toyota, will showcase its much-hyped Etios Cross at the upcoming Auto Expo 2014 in New Delhi. The vehicle, which was unveiled in Brazil and Argentina in November, has been spotted testing on Indian roads for quite some time. The car – a restyled version of Toyota Etios Liva hatchback – will come powered by the same the 1.4 liter, 68 bhp diesel engine or the 1.5 liter, 89 bhp petrol engine. According to reports, the car is based on the Etios Liva though the exterior flaunts an overhauled look. The Etios Cross looks sportier than the Etios Liva and is expected to come with features like a new front bumper and diamond cut 10-spoke alloy wheels. When launched, the vehicle will take on the likes of Volkswagen Polo Cross and Fiat Punto Cross.Meanwhile, Toyota has launched two new variants of its premium hatchback Etios Liva, dubbed VD and VD SP. Previously Etios was available in four variants – JD, GD, GD Safety Package (SP) and TRD Sportivo.Toyota Etios Liva VD comes at a price of Rs. 6.72 lakh, while the VD SP variant is priced at Rs. 7.12 lakh. The engine specifications of both models remain the same as 1.4-litre motor which can churn a power of 67 bhp with peak torque of 170 Nm.The Auto Expo 2014 is speculated to see the unveiling of around 20 new cars. Auto majors like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Volkswagen, Ford, Audi, Chevrolet, Nissan, BMW, Honda, Toyota, Jaguar Land Rover, Volvo and Mercedes-Benz are all said to be getting ready to dazzle at the event.
Close A British government-backed review released on Thursday (14 May) is seeking billions of dollars to fund the development of 15 new antibiotics to counter antibiotic resistance. The review, led by former Goldman Sachs chief economist Jim ONeill, said the lump sum payments could add up to $16-$37bn (£10-23.5bn) over 10 years, but should only be made when companies have fully developed a successful bug-killing drug.Seen in a global context, and compared to the cost of inaction, its actually peanuts. Critically linked to that were also calling for an innovation fund, about $2bn perhaps over five years, that the pharmaceutical industry itself essentially finances, ONeill said. The review says that companies that develop new antibiotics should be awarded prize money of up to $3.5bn for each new drug, instead of selling the medication at a profit.Because if you come up with the specific incentives and rewards were suggesting to get them to produce more drugs, its essentially giving them a lot of financial relief. So we think its only right that they play a role in financing the research at the early stage, ONeill added. The prizes, of between $1.5bn and $3.5bn, should be funded in part by the pharma industry itself, ONeill said, probably also with input from national governments and the global taxpayer.I think the proposal were suggesting is better than what the pharma industry would like itself, which is much higher prices so they can just charge a lot more for it. I dont think that would be a better option for every individual in this country and elsewhere in the world, he said. The successful drugmaker would then be required to make no profit from its sales of the drugs to governments and healthcare providers around the world, ONeill added, saying this approach would de-link the profitability of a drug from its volume of sales.I think there are two core problems. Theres a demand problem and a supply problem. The paper weve published today focuses all about the supply issues of getting more drugs, he saidIn recent years, bugs resistant to multiple drugs have evolved at the same time as drugmakers have cut back investment in finding new ways to fight them, creating a global health threat as superbug strains of infections like tuberculosis and gonorrhoea have become untreatable.ONeill, who was asked last year by British Prime Minister David Cameron to take an economists view of the problem, said far too little is currently invested in hunting for new drugs against drug-resistant infections. In his initial report, ONeill estimated that anti-microbial resistance (AMR) could kill an extra 10 million people a year and cost up to $100tn by 2050 if it is not brought under control.ONeill has also proposed that a $2bn innovation fund financed by drug companies should be created to invest in early-stage research and speed up development of new medicines to fight drug-resistant superbugs.Sally Davies, the UK governments chief medical adviser, welcomed ONeills latest report, saying it would stimulate important conversations between governments, pharmaceutical companies and other funders.

The 15 injured included children and nine people were “seriously” wounded, health authorities said.Prime Minister Stefan Lofven said he had strengthened the country’s border controls.“Terrorists want us to be afraid, want us to change our behaviour, want us to not live our lives normally, but that is what we’re going to do. So terrorists can never defeat Sweden, never,” he said. The attack occurred just before 3:00 pm (1300 GMT) when the stolen truck slammed into the corner of the bustling Ahlens store and the popular pedestrian street Drottninggatan, above ground from Stockholm’s central subway station.Pictures taken at the scene showed a large blue beer truck with a mangled undercarriage smashed into the Ahlens department store.Witnesses described scenes of terror and panic.“A massive truck starts driving … and mangles everything and just drives over exactly everything,” eyewitness Rikard Gauffin told AFP.“It was so terrible and there were bodies lying everywhere… it was really terrifying,” he added. The truck was towed away in the early hours of Saturday.TrappedPolice cars and ambulances rapidly flooded the scene after the attack, as central streets and squares were blocked off amid fears that another attack could be imminent.Helicopters hovered overhead across the city, sirens wailed, and police vans criss-crossed the streets using loudspeakers to urge people to head straight home and avoid crowded places. But with the metro system and commuter trains shut down for several hours after the attack, other streets heading out of the city were packed with thousands of pedestrians trying to find a way home.Haval, a 30-year-old sales clerk who didn’t want to reveal his last name, was in the metro at the time of the attack. His train stopped immediately and he had to get out, along with all the other passengers. They walked along the street before being ushered inside a nearby hotel for safety.“We were suddenly trapped inside a hotel and there was the worst kind of horror in there,” he told AFP.“We were scared, we were scared something else would happen, he added.‘Bleeding to death’Marko was in coffee shop near the scene with his girlfriend when he saw the truck ram into the store.“He hit a woman first, then he drove over a bunch of other people … We took care of everyone lying on the ground,” he told Swedish daily newspaper Aftonbladet.Hasan Sidi, another passerby, told Aftonbladet he saw two elderly women lying on the ground. He said people at the scene urged him to help one of the women who was “bleeding to death”.“One of them died… I don’t know if the other one made it,” Sidi said.“The police were shocked. Everyone was shocked.”‘You can’t break us’In an editorial, Sweden’s biggest broadsheet Dagens Nyheter wrote: “What we feared for a long time finally happened.”“The fear and panic right after the incident was inevitable. The images from the attack were terrible,” the paper said. But Stockholm managed to stay “cool-headed” even though the attacker struck “Sweden and Stockholm’s heart”, it added.Friday’s attack was the latest in a string of similar assaults with vehicles in Europe, including in London, Berlin and the southern French city of Nice. The deadliest came last year in France on the July 14 Bastille Day national holiday, when a man rammed a truck into a crowd in the Mediterranean resort of Nice, killing 86 people.Last month, Khalid Masood, a 52-year-old convert to Islam known to British security services, killed five people when he drove a car at high speed into pedestrians on London’s Westminster Bridge before launching a frenzied knife attack on a policeman guarding the parliament building. And in December, a man hijacked a truck and slammed into shoppers at a Christmas market in Berlin, killing 12 people. In 2014, IS called for attacks on citizens of Western countries and gave instructions on how they could be carried out without military equipment, using rocks or knives, or by running people over in vehicles.
Mean swarm response to an oscillating swarm marker. (A) Trajectories (>40 s long) of individual midges (each color corresponding to a different midge) are individually convoluted but remain localized over the ground-based swarm marker (black square). (B) Sketch of our experimental setup. Swarms form inside a plexiglass cube measuring 122 cm on a side and are imaged using three cameras mounted outside the enclosure. The swarm marker (in dark gray) is mounted on a linear stage (in red) that can be oscillated over a range of controlled frequencies and amplitudes along the direction indicated by the white arrows, which we label as the x direction. z increases vertically from the swarm marker (antiparallel to gravity), with the marker itself at z = 0. Midge development tanks (light blue) and four infrared light-emitting diode arrays (yellow; additional arrays on top of the enclosure are not shown) are also shown. (C) Phase-averaged position of the center of the swarm marker XM and the center of mass of the swarm XS. The swarm center of mass tracks the sinusoidal motion of the marker, although with a reduced amplitude and a phase lag. (D) The amplitude of the swarm center-of-mass motion AS as a function of the amplitude of the marker motion AM for two different oscillation frequencies, showing a linear relationship between the two. The shaded area shows the SEM. Microrobots that can form into multiple types of swarming shapes A team of researchers from Stanford University and Rothamsted Research, has found that midge swarms have some types of mechanical properties and also respond to a stimulus at times as a viscoelastic. In their paper published in the journal Science Advances, the group describes their study of swarm behavior in a species of midges and what they found. Midges are an unofficial classification of two-winged fly. There are many species, most of which are associated with swarms that live near water or marshy areas. In this new effort, the researchers wanted to learn more about the physical properties of swarming behavior from the perspective of an entire swarm, rather than the individuals in it. To that end, they obtained a mass of male Chironomus riparius, which are known to swarm over a given object such as a tree stump as part of their mating ritual—the swarm allows the females to find them from a distance. In their lab, the researchers placed a square of black felt on the bottom of a tank for the midges to use as their orienting object. When the piece of felt was moved, the swarm responded to it. To test swarm responses to it, the felt square was attached to a small oscillating device. The researchers report that they focused specifically on how the swarm responded as an entire unit to the moving object below them. They report that it behaved in a layered manner, with those closest to the moving object responding faster than those in more distant layers. The researchers suggest this was likely due to propagation delays in messaging between individuals. They also observed mechanical properties—and sometimes the swarm behaved elastically, while at other times it behaved more like a viscous liquid—which, in physics terms, meant it was behaving like a viscoelastic material. They also found that sometimes, the viscosity properties were overcome by the elastic properties, which led to an observed dampening effect of the swarm’s overall movement. The researchers suggest this made the swarm more stable, making it easier for the females to find it. They also suggest their findings might have some relevance to swarming robotics efforts.

Apple Inc is embarking on its most aggressive expansion yet onto corporate turf, hiring a dedicated sales force to talk with potential clients like Citigroup Inc and working in concert with a dozen or so developers, two sources familiar with its plans say.Experts say the company hopes to offset a gradual deceleration in growth – highlighted by iPad sales that have declined three straight quarters – by expanding its footprint in the workplace.Three months after unveiling a partnership with IBM to develop apps for corporate clients and sell them on devices, the iPhone maker’s plans to challenge sector leaders Hewlett-Packard, Dell Inc, Oracle and SAP are starting to take shape.Details remain scant, but some industry experts say that the tie-up with Big Blue gives Apple an opportunity to begin to challenge Hewlett Packard’s and Dell’s dominance of office IT, and Oracle and SAP’s command of work applications. Depending on its progress, it may hamper Microsoft, Samsung’s or Google’s own efforts in the nascent market for mobile work applications.Apps developers and other sources familiar with Apple’s plans who could not speak publicly provided additional details on how the iPhone maker is working behind the scenes. The iPhone maker has worked closely with a group of startups, including ServiceMax and PlanGrid, that already specialize in selling apps to corporate America. The two people familiar with the plans, but who could not speak publicly about them, say Apple is already in talks with other mobile enterprise developers to bring them into a more formal partnership.PlanGrid is a mobile app for construction workers to share and view blueprints. ServiceMax is a mobile app that makes it easy for companies to manage fleets of field service technicians by ensuring they have access to the right information.Apple has been sending dedicated sales teams to talk to chief information officers. At least one financial services corporation, Citigroup, has been in talks to sign on, one of the two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters.Another person familiar with the developer’s plans told Reuters that ServiceMax, whose existing customers include Procter & Gamble and DuPont, has co-hosted eight dinners with Apple over the past year in locations across the United States. About 25 or 30 chief information officers and “chief service officers” typically show up at these joint marketing and sales events.ServiceMax declined comment on what they were specifically working on with Apple. PlanGrid also declined comment. But ServiceMax chief marketing officer, Stacey Epstein, said about 95 percent of its customers use Apple devices. Each new customer will typically order thousands of iPhones and iPads, she added.”The field service market alone is a $15 billion market,” said Epstein. “One of our accounts may have thousands of field service technicians. It’s a huge market opportunity for Apple.”Apple declined to comment for this story.’Messy, Stupid’ Demands’Apple has mostly kept its plans under wraps since July, when it announced the deal with IBM. Their partnership has alternately been hailed as a dream alliance, or dismissed as an uncertain tie-up between two companies with very different philosophies. Many American corporations already deploy tablets among their workforces, for purposes ranging from pharmaceutical sales to mobile accounting.“From Apple’s point of view the enterprise is really messy, oftentimes unreasonable or even stupid in its demands,” said John Rymer, an analyst at Forrester. “They’ve never had a business model to deal with any of that. But they do want the penetration and they do want what market share they can get.”Its rivals harbor similar ambitions. A separate source familiar with the matter said Samsung is stepping up its efforts to sell devices to large enterprise clients. The company hired former chief information officer Robin Bienfait to spearhead that effort, and is on the hunt for acquisition opportunities, the person said. The source requested anonymity as they were involved in private conversations. Apple also needed help to penetrate corporations. It is relying on IBM’s predictive software, enterprise-grade security and data analytics to set its upcoming suite of apps apart from rival offerings from Oracle and Microsoft, the two original sources said.Personnel from IBM Global Technology Services, its outsourced IT division, will handle technical support for clients under the initiative, and the two companies also plan on setting up a dedicated 24-7 hotline, according to a recently updated Apple support website. The iPhone maker may be trying to replicate the model that served the iPhone well: hook the client on the software and content, then keep them coming back for the hardware, which is what drives the lions’ share of Apple’s bottom line.“It does make sense, but the devil’s in the details,” said Rymer at Forrester. “The apps have to work and be economic. Can they produce solutions that are meaningful to enough people and reduce the cost over the customers doing it themselves? We’ll see.”(Editing by Edwin Chan, Bernard Orr) Register Now »
