Disgraced USA Gymnastics doc sentenced to another 40-125 years

first_img“He trained us to believe that he was a saint that could help us, and that without him we could not get better.”Nassar addressed the court Monday in a brief statement lasting less than a minute, offering an apology similar to the one he gave at the January sentencing hearing.“The words expressed by everyone that has spoken, including the parents, have impacted me to my innermost core,” Nassar said.“It’s impossible to convey the depth and breadth of how sorry I am to each and every one involved.”‘His lies worked’The key question for many victims has been who knew of Nassar’s abuse and who could have stopped him earlier.“We have taken care of one perpetrator, we have not taken care of the systems that allowed him to flourish for 20 years,” Rachael Denhollander, the first to publicly accuse Nassar, told a throng of news media at the courthouse following the sentencing. With a stellar reputation as the doctor to Olympic champions, Nassar evaded scrutiny several times since the late 1990s by insisting his abuse was in fact cutting-edge treatment that was misunderstood by some patients.“His lies worked,” lead prosecutor Angela Povilaitis said in her closing statement. “Each time he got away, he was empowered to continue and perfect his abuse and his techniques even more.”Even after Nassar came under serious scrutiny, his abuse was not immediately stopped.USA Gymnastics reported Nassar to the FBI in July 2015, but he continued to see patients at MSU until a newspaper exposed him in September 2016. Brace for potentially devastating typhoon approaching PH – NDRRMC Nassar had previously been sentenced to 60 years in prison on child pornography possession charges in December, and up to 175 years in prison on sexual abuse charges in January.‘Master of manipulation’Over the past three weeks of court hearings, some 200 women, girls and victims’ family members confronted Nassar and gave wrenching accounts of his abuse and its lasting damage. They spoke of years of depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, suicide attempts and broken bodies that had not received proper care and suffered under chronic pain. Many victims gave nearly identical accounts of Nassar’s pattern of abuse: a star doctor who seemed to befriend them, only to suddenly abuse them during medical appointments — often with parents in the room.“Larry Nassar is a master of manipulation,” Kaitlyn Basel, a dancer who was first abused by Nassar at the age of 12, told the court Friday.ADVERTISEMENT Former Michigan State University and USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar appears in court for his final sentencing phase in Eaton County Circuit Court on February 5, 2018, in Charlotte, Michigan.  AFPCHARLOTTE, United States — Larry Nassar, the former USA Gymnastics doctor who sexually abused girls and young women for decades under the guise of medical treatment, was sentenced Monday to an additional 40 to 125 years in prison.Nassar already faced a lifetime behind bars for two prior sentences after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting women and girls in his role as a high-profile sports medicine doctor at USA Gymnastics and at a Michigan State University (MSU) clinic.ADVERTISEMENT 2 ‘newbie’ drug pushers fall in Lucena sting The New York Times reported that at least 40 more women and girls were molested during that time.Victims have called for systemic changes at MSU and amateur athletics, and for others — such as coaches and organizational leaders — to be held accountable.Several resignations have followed, and MSU, the gymnastics governing organization and the US Olympic Committee all are facing investigations. /cbb Patience pays off Sports venues to be ready in time for SEA Games PLAY LIST 00:59Sports venues to be ready in time for SEA Games01:27Filipino athletes get grand send-off ahead of SEA Games00:50Trending Articles01:29Police teams find crossbows, bows in HK university01:35Panelo suggests discounted SEA Games tickets for students02:49Robredo: True leaders perform well despite having ‘uninspiring’ boss02:42PH underwater hockey team aims to make waves in SEA Games01:44Philippines marks anniversary of massacre with calls for justice01:19Fire erupts in Barangay Tatalon in Quezon City NEXT BLOCK ASIA 2.0 introduces GURUS AWARDS to recognize and reward industry influencers MOST READ Typhoon Kammuri accelerates, gains strength en route to PHcenter_img LATEST STORIES Read Next Don’t miss out on the latest news and information. Call it the Aldo Strategy: If he can get Mayweather feeling both confident and angry, there’s a chance Mayweather will let down his defense enough to attempt to finish McGregor in brute style — and maybe McGregor will have an opening.Mayweather hasn’t seemed interested in McGregor’s typical trash talk during the buildup to the fight, but perhaps he could waver the champion’s focus with the wrong word, an errant elbow or a rabbit punch behind the head — enough to draw a warning, but not lose a point.McGregor amplified his boasts this week, calling Mayweather “a broken man” and vowing to finish him within two rounds. He throws hundreds of punches from every angle with the goal of setting up the vicious left hand that has turned out the lights on MMA opponents. And if none of that is successful, McGregor could bend the Marquess of Queensberry rules to their breaking point in hopes of goading Mayweather into a brawl.None of it is guaranteed to work. But it’s definitely worth a shot.Looking back at Mayweather’s history is a daunting task, given his 49-0 record, but it contains clues for tactics that could magnify McGregor’s chances. For instance, McGregor could amplify the strategy used by Marcos Maidana and Jose Luis Castillo. Both boxers pressed Mayweather constantly, using roughhouse tactics on the border of legality, and bombarded Mayweather with punches, many from unorthodox angles.Mayweather won both fights, but definitely looked uncomfortable for long stretches. McGregor doesn’t have the hand speed of those professional boxers, but he should strive to emulate their urgency. He should also attempt to show Mayweather things he’s never seen before in the ring, and his decision not to hire a boxing trainer for the bout might actually help in that regard. The UFC star should switch stances and try just about any punch, including the looping overhand shots rarely seen in high-level boxing matches because they’re easily countered, but common in MMA bouts because of the distance they create from the opponent. If McGregor gets hit, so be it. Every punch absorbed is the price for a chance to reply.McGregor believes Mayweather made a mistake by agreeing to fight in 8-ounce gloves instead of the typical 10-ounce pillows, but he shouldn’t rely solely on the unicorn one-punch knockout. While McGregor has definite power, only the biggest Mac homer would think it’s something Mayweather hasn’t seen from boxers — and Mayweather has shown a solid chin and excellent recovery skills on the few occasions he has been hit.Instead, the key is to use that energy to get in a good position to unload the left hand or a combination through Mayweather’s shifty defense. McGregor could repeatedly tie up Mayweather and attempt to land shots in the clinch.last_img read more

He has been one of the most successful batsmen in domestic cricket in the last few years. Yuvraj missed the second Test against Sri Lanka in July due to fever but could not make it back to the squad after his replacement Suresh Raina hit a century on debut. The other slightly unexpected call was to drop Karnataka pacer Abhimanyu Mithun, who had impressed the team management in Sri Lanka in the absence of pacers Zaheer Khan and Sreesanth. Both Zaheer and Sreesnath made comebacks from injury, along with spinner Harbhajan Singh and opener Gautam Gambhir. All four had missed India’s series-levelling win at the P Sara Oval in Sri Lanka last month. Yuvraj has been suffering from a prolong form slump and that could be a reason behind his ouster. The Indian team, led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, will play two Tests against Australia, first in Mohali from October 1 to 5 and second in Bangalore from October 9 to 13. The Test series will be followed by the ODI series. The Ricky Ponting-led Australian team arrived in New Delhi on Monday. They start their campaign in India with a three-day practice match against Board President’s XI from September 25 in Mohali. Yuvraj to head Rest of IndiaThe axe has fallen on Yuvraj, who had been under pressure to keep his place in the Test squad. After managing a half-century in the first Test in Galle against Sri Lanka, Yuvraj missed the next two matches due to injury. Raina, who took Yuvraj’s place at number six, slammed a hundred on debut and sealed his spot. The middle-order batsman has had a difficult time lately. Plagued by a succession of injuries, Yuvraj suffered a loss of form as well.advertisementSince his Test debut nearly seven years ago, he has failed to cement his place in the team despite several opportunities. In last 12 months, Yuvraj played six matches but managed to score just 252 runs at an average of 36. The selectors have now given Yuvraj a chance to regain his confidence by performing in the forthcoming Irani Trophy championship as the captain of Rest of India. Indian squad:M.S.
